Entain urges immediate ban on unlicensed UK sports sponsorship
On 18 September 2026, Entain (Ladbrokes / Coral) renewed its call for the UK government to ban sports sponsorship and advertising by gambling operators that lack a Great Britain licence — and to do so without delay.

What Entain is asking for
In a Friday press push covered by iGaming Business, Entain said it had identified 11 of 20 Premier League clubs with sponsorship or advertising arrangements involving operators that do not hold a UK Gambling Commission licence — higher than the government’s earlier estimate of eight.
CEO Stella David argued clubs that struck fresh deals knew a ban was coming and that government should act immediately, “even if that means clubs ordering new kit mid-season.” Entain also wants the ban to cover online and digital advertising as well as physical placements.
Named pairs attributed in that coverage include Chelsea (8XBet), Tottenham Hotspur (VSBet) and Nottingham Forest (FUN88). Treat those as desk-reported commercial arrangements, not as Bonusjungle endorsements or vault listings.
What the government has proposed
A DCMS consultation on banning unlicensed gambling sponsorship ran from 15 July to 9 September 2026. The government’s preferred option is a fixed-date ban in August 2027, ahead of the 2027/28 football season, using secondary legislation. An alternative timeline discussed in the consultation materials would allow some existing contracts to run longer.
Separately, Premier League clubs already observe a voluntary front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship ban from the 2026–27 season. Sleeve, perimeter and other placements remain the contested ground — and the consultation text targets physical sponsorship manifestations across sport, with an intent to extend beyond sport so other sectors do not become substitute vehicles.
Why it matters for vault readers
For players, the story is about who appears on shirts and screens, not about a change to any single house’s cash-out rules. Unlicensed partners are not subject to the same GB licence conditions as Commission-licensed operators. Until secondary legislation lands, club kits and digital placements can still carry brands outside that perimeter.
This note does not invent sponsorship fees, map every club deal, claim any named offshore brand is listed in the Vault, or explain how to reach a geo-blocked lobby.
