Britain’s deposit limits change on 30 September: withdrawals won’t reset the cap

A deposit cap measures money paid in; a withdrawal does not erase a gross deposit. · Bonusjungle illustration

UKGC rules will reserve the name ‘deposit limit’ for gross deposits. Here is what that means for withdrawals, reset dates and limits already on your account.

A clearer meaning for ‘deposit limit’

From 30 September 2026, online gambling operators licensed by the Gambling Commission for Great Britain must offer gross deposit limits, with at least the same prominence as any other financial limits. Only this type may be labelled a deposit limit. The Commission moved the deadline from June to September to give operators more development time.

Gross means every deposit counts towards the cap: withdrawing money does not subtract from that total. Operators may still offer net deposit limits, which do subtract withdrawals, alongside stake or loss limits. Those options need their own names. This is a British regulatory change, not a worldwide casino rule.

The £100 example: why a withdrawal changes nothing

Take an illustrative £100 weekly gross deposit limit. Deposit £80, then withdraw £30 within the same period: the deposit total remains £80 and £20 of the limit remains. The withdrawal does not create £50 of new deposit room.

For comparison, that same transaction history is £50 in net deposits: £80 minus £30. That is why the two labels matter. £100 is an example chosen for this explanation, not a new government-set cap or a recommended gambling budget. A deposit limit measures money entering the account; it does not measure every stake or guarantee a maximum loss.

Check the reset date as well as the amount

The Commission says gross deposit limits must use fixed periods. Other limit types may use fixed or rolling periods. The updated standard requires 24-hour, seven-day and one-month options; when several periods apply together, the most restrictive limit governs.

Once a deposit limit is reached, further deposits must stop until the period restarts or a customer-requested increase takes effect. The existing safeguard remains: an increase needs at least 24 hours of cooling off and a fresh confirmation afterwards. Reductions must take effect immediately unless a technical failure prevents this.

What to look for in your account

Open the financial-limit settings and check the label, the amount and the next reset time together. If the provider also offers a net limit, check which one you have actually selected. A familiar number can describe different controls.

The rule does not establish one shared allowance across every gambling site: account-level limits are the minimum requirement. Treat the amount as a ceiling, not a target to spend. Our responsible gambling page has further support information. 18+.
