Louisiana's Gaming Control Board unanimously approved a conditional sports-betting licence extension for DraftKings through 19 February 2027. Regulators want more time on shareholder suitability and on recent AI and VIP reporting. The board stressed that news reports are not findings of violations.
Louisiana's Gaming Control Board has unanimously approved a conditional extension of DraftKings' sports-betting licence through 19 February 2027, with a full renewal hearing set for 18 February. The vote came at the board's 15 October 2026 meeting in House Committee Room 1 at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge. DraftKings' current Louisiana sports-betting licence expires on 10 November 2026.
The board is not renewing the permit for a full new term yet. Assistant Attorney General Delancey Houston told the meeting that the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division needs more time. One issue is shareholder suitability: Houston said at least one holder of 5% or more has not completed suitability checks, and a petition to treat that holder as an institutional investor is still pending. The other is what Houston called "recent allegations brought against DraftKings". The board's own questions at the hearing focused on recent reports that DraftKings uses artificial intelligence to target losing bettors, and on how it treats VIP customers who may be showing signs of gambling harm. Houston said additional time is needed to fully investigate those allegations.
Chairman Chris Hebert stressed that news reports are not findings of regulatory violations. He said the board still has a duty to examine matters that could affect the integrity of gaming and the protection of Louisiana players. He also told DraftKings representatives that the conditional proposal is not a determination that the company has done anything wrong — it is time to finish the reviews and for the company to answer written questions.

Seven conditions on the extension
Legal Sports Report and CDC Gaming both report seven conditions that DraftKings must meet while the extension runs. Legal Sports Report lists them as:
- File all required suitability submissions, including any petition to treat the outstanding shareholder as an institutional holder, within 30 days.
- Submit proposed protocols so ownership changes are notified in time.
- Respond in writing, within 30 days of each request, on artificial intelligence, prediction-market activity, digital audits involving Louisiana residents, and any other information the board asks for.
- Review and certify that marketing, commercials and digital ads meet responsible-gambling rules, within 30 days.
- File monthly compliance reports by the 15th of each month (prediction markets, new digital products, geolocation / KYC / AML / responsible-gambling changes, unresolved issues, material complaints, advertising problems, pending litigation or regulatory actions, and corrective steps).
- Name a senior company liaison for board communications within seven days.
- Cooperate fully and supply everything required during the conditional period.
The agenda for the 15 October meeting listed the renewal application for DK Crown Holdings, Inc. d/b/a DraftKings (permit No. B016503468) under sports wagering items. BetMGM's platform-provider renewal was on the same agenda as a separate item.
What DraftKings said at the hearing
DraftKings President of Operations and co-founder Paul Liberman and Chief Responsible Gaming Officer Lori Kalani testified. "We do not use AI in any way to target losing gamblers by any means," Liberman said, according to CDC Gaming. He argued that most customers on an entertainment platform end up losing money over time, so identifying a losing gambler "doesn't necessarily make sense in that context". Kalani described responsible-gambling triggers and account reviews. She said DraftKings has closed 175 Louisiana accounts this year for responsible-gambling reasons — separate from self-exclusion, cool-offs and customers who close on their own — and that the company does not send promotions for two weeks after a cool-off or for 30 days after self-exclusion ends.
None of that testimony is a regulator finding. The next fixed date is the renewal hearing on 18 February 2027. Before then, DraftKings has to meet the 30-day and seven-day deadlines in the conditions and file its monthly reports by the 15th.
Why it matters for players
For anyone using DraftKings in Louisiana, the practical point is continuity with strings attached: the operator can keep offering sports betting under the conditional extension while State Police and the board finish suitability and AI-related reviews. It is not a finding that AI targeting or VIP failures were proven in Louisiana. It also sits next to other US moves on AI and promotions — including New York's proposed AI promo rules and Massachusetts' operator questions — without importing those rules into Louisiana.
